Building Your Mind + Body + Soul

The Elkins/Randolph County YMCA

Mar 14, 2020

Dear members,

As the situation with COVID-19 continues to unfold locally and across the country, we wanted to provide an update about how our Y is responding in this constantly changing situation.

We are following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as recommendations from the YMCA of the USA, the State of West Virginia and the health department to help us make informed decisions.

As there are no confirmed regional cases yet, we would like to keep the facility open for now. We do plan, however, to make some changes to our operations to increase our ability to keep the facility sanitized for the safety of our members, staff and community.

Suspension of Day Passes and Guest Visitors

In order to limit the number of visitors to the facility and face-to-face exchanges at our member services desk, we will limit access to the facility to members only. This will take effect Saturday, March 14th. This means we will not sell day/visitor passes or honor guest privileges.

Suspension of Child Care Programming

Because our facility is used by all ages and our rooms are multi-purpose, we have decided to close our after-school program and babysitting service at this time. This was a difficult decision as we are aware of the extra burden this will cause working families. However, following the same reasoning for closing schools, we want to limit the chance that our Y kids are exposed to germs and then return to their homes and expose family members.

Select Closing of Rooms

In order to increase the capacity of our cleaning staff to sanitize the facility, we are closing several rooms. This includes the youth and teen center, the (blue) fitness studio by the racquetball court and the cycling studio.

Programs and Classes

Announcements about any changes or cancellations to our group exercise and pool schedule will be made separately as the situation evolves. We are reviewing our group exercise schedule to ensure that classes have adequate space to allow members to keep a six-foot radius between them and other class participants. For now, our pool schedule remains the same.

What can members do?

If you or a loved one are experiencing flu-like symptoms, including fever, coughing, sneezing and shortness of breath, we ask that you please stay home, rest and contact a medical provider if symptoms worsen.

Hand washing remains the most effective method of preventing the spread of germs, including coronavirus. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.

We are asking all members to clean equipment BEFORE and AFTER workouts, with the disinfectant available in the weight room and cardio room. Please also make use of hand sanitizer, which is available throughout the building.

While no one can predict with certainty whether our community will be severely impacted by coronavirus, we believe it is important to be prepared for the possibility. We hope that temporary changes to our daily schedules will help keep everyone in our community healthy and safe.

We will keep you updated with information on the Y as it develops in the days and weeks to come. For up to date information, please visit our Facebook page facebook.com/YmcaElkins/. If you have questions, please reach out to us at info@elkinsymca.com or 304-636-4515.

On behalf of our staff and board of directors, we value you, our members, and thank you for your understanding, support, and cooperation in helping to keep our community safe.

Sid Gillispie
Executive Director
