About The Elkins Y

Our History

A Legacy of Community & Growth

Founded in 1903 and housed in its landmark Davis Avenue building since 1908, the Elkins‑Randolph County YMCA has been a cornerstone of our community for more than 120 years, continually evolving to meet the needs of our members.

Early Beginnings (1903-1908)

  • January 28, 1903: Inspired by a speech from George F. Tibbits at the Elkins Opera House, about 100 community members expressed interest in forming a local YMCA.
  • October 1903: Stephen B. Elkins generously offered to fund the construction of a dedicated YMCA building at the northeast corner of Davis Avenue and Fourth Street.
  • November 1906: As construction neared completion, Mrs. Elkins agreed to partially furnish the building, while the association secured the remaining necessities.
  • March 11, 1908: After five years of dedication and planning, the Elkins YMCA officially opened its doors, welcoming over 1,000 visitors during the open house.

A Growing Community Resource

From its early days as one of the first YMCAs in West Virginia, the Elkins-Randolph County YMCA has continuously expanded to meet the evolving needs of individuals and families. Today, the facility serves as a hub for health, wellness, learning, and community engagement. Our services include:

Fitness & Recreation Facilities

Our facility features fully equipped fitness center, gymnasium, swimming pool, group fitness studios, and locker rooms, supporting both group classes and personal training.

Childcare & Programs for Youth

We provide support for families through after-school care, summer camps, scholarships, special Family Swim and Open Gym times, and other youth-focused activities.

Community Spaces & Facility Use

We offer facilities for community events, meetings, private events, birthday parties, and organizational gatherings, with room rentals, kitchen access, and pool rentals.

Ongoing Community Support

In addition to our regular programs, our facility is home to Literacy Volunteers of Randolph County (LVRC), which offers free tutoring in reading, ESL, and basic computer skills for adults.

For over a century, the Elkins YMCA has remained dedicated to building a stronger, healthier community. We continue to evolve, ensuring that everyone—regardless of age, background, or income—has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
