information for youth and teen members

The Elkins YMCA has a long history of being a space that our area youth can feel like they belong to and come together with friends to pursue fitness and fun. We ask that parents review these important facility rules with your child to ensure the Y remains a safe and enjoyable space for all our members.

VISITING THE Y

All members and visitors to the Y are required to enter the facility through the main entrance and check-in at the front desk on the second floor. Youth members should not use the emergency exit door by the weight room to enter the facility or open the door to allow other visitors to enter the facility this way.

All visitors are required to sign a facility waiver and minors must have the waiver signed by a parent to use the facility.

Youth 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

WEIGHT ROOM/CARDIO ROOM RULES

Members must be 14 years old to use the weight room. Members must be 13 years old to use the cardio equipment without adult supervision, or 10 years of age and up with parent supervision.

We encourage youths interested in fitness to use these spaces, however, members who use the equipment inappropriately or use these rooms as a hang out space will be asked to leave the room and/or the facility.

Appropriate clothing should be worn when working out. That includes wearing clean indoor shoes and a shirt or tank top.

Youth members should wipe down the equipment with disinfectant wipes after use to help stop the spread of germs, and always rack the weights after use.

Gym Rules

The gym has a schedule that includes time for both open gym and reserved times for classes, programs and pickleball, so we recommend that you or your child go online and book a time or call the Y before you come to make sure the court is available.

Food and drink is not permitted in the gym. Any music played in this space must be appropriate for all ages and not include foul or explicit language.

Hanging Out at the Y

We know kids need spaces to be with their friends and just be kids. There are spaces and opportunities at the Y for kids to do this, like  playing basketball in the gym, swimming in the pool, playing racquetball or wallyball in the racquetball court (ask the desk staff for equipment). We are also in the process of renovating a room off of the lobby which we will use as a game room for our youth members.

The fitness rooms at the Y however, are not suitable for hanging out. This includes the cardio room, the yellow and blue fitness rooms, weight room, and locker rooms, so please discuss this with your child.

locker rooms

Youth and teens 17 and under are not permitted in the men's or women's locker rooms. There are washrooms available in the lobby and girls' and boys' locker rooms are located on the first floor by the pool entrance.

Right to Privacy Policy

The Y prohibits the photography, videotaping, filming or audio recording of other members and visitors without their consent and may result in the loss of membership privileges.

Any recordings that are reported occurring in private areas like washrooms and lockerrooms will be referred to the police.

SMOKING AND VAPING

Smoking and vaping are not allowed in the YMCA facility and will result in the loss of membership privileges.

RIGHT TO END MEMBERSHIP

Because we are a member organization, we reserve the right to terminate memberships in the event a member violates our policies. This may include any intentional vandalism of the facility, fighting, violating the 'right to privacy' policy, sneaking non-members into the facility, using equipment inappropriately, or being disrespectful to other members, staff or the Y facility in general.

----

We hope your child develops a lifelong relationship with the YMCA! We have served many generations from the community in our 120 year history, and hope to continue to do so for many more years.
